The use of the definite article in Hebrew might not always meet our expectations. We sometimes wonder why it is there, and at other times why it is not there. Occasionally there is the question whether the article should be translated or not. I offer two documents: 

• The document "Unusual Usage of definite article" is an overview: things translators need to reckon with.
• The document "Use & non-use of definite article" partly is just another way of presenting the data. But it is more elaborate in that toward the end I make use of two scientific publications which discuss matters like identifiability, specific indefiniteness and the cataphoric article in discourse.
